As Cara continues to expand in the restaurant industry, we are looking to add a business minded law clerk to our legal team in Vaughan, Ontario. The Law Clerk is primarily responsible for providing legal support to Cara’s brands and central departments in respect of franchise matters, preparing franchise and related agreements between Cara and its franchisees and preparing franchise disclosure documents and related correspondence. The Law Clerk may also be responsible for assisting Cara’s legal team in providing advertising and marketing legal support to Cara’s brands and handling inquiries and performing other job responsibilities as they arise from time to time.

As the ideal candidate your duties and responsibilities will include but may not be limited to:

  • Prepare franchise and related agreements in respect of new restaurant openings, renewals of franchise agreements, transfers between franchisees and sales of corporate restaurants to franchisees
  • Prepare and issue Cara’s Disclosure Document in accordance with various provinces’ disclosure legislation, including preparation of site specific information
  • Maintain database in relation to key terms of all franchise and related agreements; generate and review reports from the database on an ongoing basis and in order to deal with specific issues as they arise
  • Provide ongoing support to all brands and departments within Cara regarding franchise agreement inquiries
  • Provide legal support to Cara’s brands advising on a wide range of marketing and advertising law issues, with particular emphasis on: Advising and providing guidance to the marketing teams in developing advertising material and customer communications to ensure compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation, guidelines, industry standards, internal guidelines and contractual agreements
  • Review advertising and marketing material and customer communications across all channels, including television, radio, print and websites
  • Draft legal disclaimers and review and draft contest rules and related material including contest mechanics, entry forms, waivers etc.
  • Work closely with in-house counsel and other team members in respect of various franchise enforcement, franchise system integration and advertising and marketing related files as matters arise


As the ideal candidate the required skills include:

  • Law Clerk diploma and related work experience
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Organized with a keen attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong service orientation
  • Must be able to prioritize and juggle multiple tasks in a fast paced and evolving environment
  • Need to meet deadlines on short notice
